Paulding County SWAT Team members were called out to Haralson County today to help get a barricaded suspect who was being sought on felony warrants by the US Marshals Service, and though the suspect was injured due to a self-inflicted wound no one else was hurt.

The Haralson County Sheriff’s Office posted earlier this afternoon the details of a standoff with Brian Kelly Chasteen, 49, of Ringgold, who was taken into custody and transported to a local medical center, per the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.

Local and federal officials had arrived at a Jacksonville Road in Tallapoosa around 7 a.m. today (April 27) and sought to take Chasteen into custody on warrants. Chasteen barricaded himself inside the home, claimed he had a weapon and a standoff ensued.

“On scene, negotiators attempted to get Chasteen to come out of the home, but he refused. The Paulding County SWAT team were requested and responded to the residence,” the report from HCSO stated. “Brian Chasteen was wanted on Felony Escape and Failure to Appear warrants out of Catoosa County, Georgia. He was recently sentenced to 20 years for trafficking methamphetamines and the judge allowed him to be released to get his affairs in order but gave him a date to turn himself in. Chasteen did not turn himself in at the appointed time and warrants were issued for his arrest.”

The Paulding County SWAT team was called out, a negotiator made contact, and tried to get him to come out of the house peacefully. Instead, he refused to come out, and eventually, police took the option to deploy tear gas and try to get Chasteen out of the home without having to use further force.

“After the deployment of the tear gas, Chasteen did exit the house with a self-inflicted wound from a knife. Aid was rendered to Chasteen, and the injury was not life-threatening. Chasteen was transported to a local medical center in the custody of the US Marshals,” the release stated.

Sheriff Stacy Williams offered thanks for the help from the Paulding SWAT Team and the two counties’ combined Drug Task Forces, along with other public safety officials who responded.

“This was a good outcome,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “The scene was contained, no Law Enforcement personnel were injured, and the fugitive is now in custody. We stand committed to serve and protect our citizens in Haralson County and we feel like we accomplished that today.”
